Whether you are buying a new development or established home you’ll find that it will contain a central heating system which is a modern day essential. Nowadays central heating systems are a feature in every modern household.
Heating is vital, especially in winter. Most homes are transformed when the heating system is switched on delivering a comfortable temperature. A central heating system also delivers hot water for bathing and washing. You need heating and hot water every day so you need a system that you can depend upon. Out of sight day-to-day functioning without unforeseen breakdowns is a standard requirement of any central heating system.
Whilst there are multiple varieties the two main variants of system are vented and sealed systems.
Expect to find a pumped or vented central heating system as they are the most familiar. A pumped or vented Central Heating System has a hot water cylinder and a feed and expansion tank. In addition to allowing for water expansion when heated the expansion tank also tops up the central heating system with water when necessary. The tank is positioned in the highest place in the home, normally the loft area.
Sealed central heating systems are now more normally installed in new homes. An advantage of a sealed system is that it has no demand for an expansion tank. The mains water is used to supply the sealed Central Heating System. The loft is not now used for the expansion tank or copper pipework, you will get the following advantages when taking a sealed system:
- frozen winter copper piping from copper pipes in the loft it is now eliminated
- your maintenance requirements are reduced as there are fewer elements
- fewer leakages from piping joints
- you will get fewer problems from air ingress leading to corrosion or blockages
It is usual for the water supply pressure to alter and that this is dealt with by incorporating a pressure vessel. A safety valve will open if the pressure is higher than advocated. Similarly cold water is allowed into the system if the pressure is lower than the advocated level.
