Emptying the central heating system

Emptying the central heating system

If you want work carried through on your fully pumped heating system you may want to empty the system. To fit a thermostatic radiator valve or replace a failed radiator are two examples. Whilst this will be executed typically by an experienced heating engineer it is something that the general odd-job man can execute if they have the knowledge of other household maintenance chores.

In most circumstances Emptying the central heating is implemented to clean the heating radiators. Before you do anything to the actual radiator you should turn off the gas boiler and any gas or electric that supplies the gas boiler. To successfully finish this task you also need to see to it that no more water enters the central heating system.

The expansion cystern in the attic is used to normally top up the system with water. This has a ball valve that is the same as the one seen in your toilet tank. The ball floats on the water surface raising a metal arm shutting down the valve when the water has reached the right level. However when some water is pulled off the cylinder, the ball drops, the valve opens and more water gets into the water tank. This is what needs to be contained when Cleaning your radiator. Using a metal or wooden rod to stop the ball leaves are falling in the water tank will stop water getting in the system as the water is drained.

When you are confident that you are prevented any further water entering the central heating system you should connect a hose pipe to the outlet valve at the bottom of a radiator taking care to ensure the end of the hosepipe is in a drain outdoors your property. The water from your heating radiator will passage through the hose and out of your radiator system. Obviously, if you want to empty the whole heating system you will need to attach the hosepipe to one of the level metal radiators. Be patient and ensure that all water has emptied from the central heating system and no more water is getting in before you begin any further work.

The work can be hurried up by opening the bleed valves in the top floor radiators. When finished work can now start on the system.
