Get a lower energy charge
If we see the television set we all understand that it is important to reduce energy consumption these days. Gas costs seem to be forever on the rise and it is therefore also helpful to make best use of the energy you buy. Whilst heating boiler systems have become more efficient in recent months they will typically consume up to fifty percent of all your gas costs. Here’s a few easy to implement tips to help you get lower gas expenses.
Don’t use the gas central heating in places where it is not required :
If you have a spare bedchamber that is not being used switch off the central heating system radiator in the room. There are no disadvantages in not heating rooms which are not used, but there is an advantage in reducing the energy costs to heat your home. See To It that you also closed the door to the room to stop airflow and cold draughts.
Prefer the central heating in preference to using a fire :
If the room needs to be warmer use thermostatically moderated radiator valves and increase the temperature setting. With coal or wood fires most of the heat disappears up the flue, an electric fire is nowhere near as cost-efficient as the central heating.
Eliminate draughts with insulation
If you allow cold draughts to come into your home then you need to pay for more energy to heat this air. The first place to look will be your doorways and ensure that any visible cracks are blocked off. Use a foam based sealer to close off any cracks between your door frame and the windows where these meet the exterior wall. If you live in an older home you might be astounded how often these gaps occur. If you are careful and use a wax candle flame you can detect where drafts are in a room.
Put on a sweater and warmer clothing :
Putting on a jumper will keep you warm rather than turning up the heating. You may not acknowledge it but a small 1° decrease in the room temperature can save a large 10percent on your heating use.
Use the drapes effectively :
When the sun shines in the winter make sure that it can heat your house like keeping the curtains open. At night time as the external temperatures drop a lot of heat can leach outside through your windows. Closing a set of heavy curtains can reduce this heat loss, if you stick to this tactic over several months you can save large sums on your heating charges. Thick curtains are best at stopping heat loss than thin ones.
Some tips for other parts of your heating system :
Some central heating systems have a hot water tank and this must be insulated. Do not pay to heat water and then let it cool down throughout the day.
Putting shiny foil at the rear of radiators could save a large sum each year.
