There are many optional products that are available to add to your central heating system to keep it running on a regular basis, and there are others that you can install and let them do the work for you day by day. Regardless, a gas central heating systems that’s given proper care will work for you smoothly. Our Government and environmental activists have been telling us to switch off lights, turn televisions completely off instead of leaving them on standby, and lower the temperature of our washing machines as well us the thermostats of our rooms. All the above enlisted ways effectively save energy, protect the environment and bring down the electricity bill. But what about getting your central heating system to work more efficiently? The build up of gunk and limescale deposits in your central heating system will cause it to run less efficiently.
It usually happens in areas where hard water is present, you can go for water treatment to avoid these deposits.
The term ‘water treatment’ is one that is used to describe various methods of taking care of your system. A wide assortment of water treatment products is easily available like sludge remover, scale reducer, anti-freeze, magnetic scale fighter, noise reducer, electronic scale inhibitor, and the like.
You can either get hard or soft water in UK, depending on the area you live in. If you spot limescale formation inside your kettle or bath taps, there is probably hard water running in your taps. Any accumulation of limescale will make your system run less economically and therefore increase your heating bill. A thin layer of limescale can increase your fuel bills by 40 percent. Limescale is simply calcium deposits in your system. Soft water area residents should not worry too much, but it doesn’t hurt to ask for help if you are not so sure.
Most water treatments act by altering the molecular structure of the water and the particles therein and changing the way it behaves. Some methods change one structure into another; a few others, remove the interfering structure; and the remaining, prevent the formation of limescale.
The outlook for possible corrosion can be determined by monitoring pH and salt levels as well as ionic conditions, using standard chemical testing kits.
Remember that when two different metals are connected (for example- aluminium and brass), an anode and cathode polarity is created thus starting the process of corrosion; this is something that a competent technician should watch out for when installing your system. By law, only CORGI registered tradespeople can deal with gas connections, this scheme is now known as Gas Safe.
You should decide about the water treatment well in advance, especially when you are installing a new heating system. If you are upgrading your current system, you must cleanse your whole system before any water treatment chemicals are added.
The central heating system will take water from the main pipeline, and in this line, even if a functional water treatment method is already there to tackle the problem of hard water this method will be of no use for your heating system. These water softening chemicals can produce better lather and are good for your skin, but they cannot reverse the choking and pitting inside the heating system.
You basically need to prevent your system from three things, limescale deposits, biological growth and corrosion.
Corrosion will begin as soon as the tank is filled with water. Corrosion produces sludge and this prevents free circulation, this can eventually lead to formation of cold spots on radiators. Pinholes can develop in the radiators which can make the boiler noisy when heating up.
In hard water areas the calcium and magnesium in the water causes limescale. Once the water is heated it leaves deposits of these minerals which form a hard crust, building up over time and blocking pipes etc. Limescale can again make the central heating system noisy.
Biological growth in the system is another one to avoid. This is usually introduced into the system through open tanks. After managing to enter the system, it spreads by creating slime and gunk. This material can really make your system under perform by clogging up the pipework.
Plenty of free help is available on the internet. These resources cover product details as well as user feedback. Lets first have a look at the manufacturers. You can see below a list of some of the most popular products and their manufacturers. Blogs also offer ample source of free help and information or you can contact the companies with any questions.
Now you should be able to choose and install an effective central heating system which is enjoyable, healthy and economical on both kinds of green!.
